TMJ / Facial Pain Therapy
Dentistry is about more than your teeth and gums; it is about caring for the entire face, teeth
and bone anatomy. The experienced Smileology dental team provides personal attention for
your various dental concerns, including TMJ, clenching and bruxing, head and neck pain,
migraines, as well as muscle and facial pain.
Much about the smile is determined by our DNA, including the lengths of muscles and
ligaments that span the jaw, face, head, and neck. Muscle length itself may not be
changeable, but it can be adapted through strengthening and other factors. As we
consistently use our mouth, changes may occur to teeth and to the bone structure in the jaw.
The changes that occur with time disrupt the harmonious structure we were intended to
have. The result, in many cases, is chronic pain.
TMJ disorder is the result of dysfunction in the joints that facilitate jaw movement. Due to
the location of dysfunction, you may think pain or other symptoms would be localized.
Symptoms of TMJ, however, may include:
- Chronic facial pain
- Chronic head and neck pain, including migraines
- Ringing in the ears
- Popping or clicking in the jaw
- Limited mobility in the jaw
- Stiffness in the jaw and neck
- Difficulty chewing
- Excessive wear to teeth
TMJ is a condition that requires attention! At Smileology, we treat each patient individually,
seeking first to uncover the cause of dysfunctional muscle and/or joint issues. There are a
number of reasons why TMJ disorder may become a problem. One of the most common is
clenching and grinding the teeth, called bruxism. Many people are not aware they have
bruxism, which may present itself in the mouth as cracked or worn teeth. Other factors that
may influence functionality include stress, bite issues, posture, and trauma such as a direct
injury to the jaw.
Patients with TMJ disorder sometimes experience generalized facial pain, as well as other
symptoms. Working together, we will create a plan to reinstate harmonious relationships
between the oral structures. Some of the options we consider for treatment include:
- Stress management
- Nutritional counseling
- Stretching and physiotherapy exercises
- Occlusal adjustments
- Full mouth reconstruction
- Bite evaluation
- Custom fabricated Occlusal Guard
- Botox injections
We may also make recommendations for our patients to receive physical therapy and/or
chiropractic care from reputable providers in our area.
Relief from chronic pain can come as quickly as one visit with our experienced dental team,
but often TMJ issues take time to resolve and may return if stressors return.
We schedule patients for follow ups every few weeks to ensure treatment is progressing as
desired. If needed, alterations can be made to the protocol in order to continue to minimize
the stress on temporomandibular joints and maximize function and comfort.
The health of your facial muscles and jaw directly affect your teeth and they are vital to your
wellbeing. Receive personalized dental care in a friendly environment when you visit
