Dentistry is about more than your teeth and gums; it is about caring for the entire face, teeth and bone anatomy. The experienced Smileology dental team provides personal attention for your various dental concerns, including TMJ, clenching and bruxing, head and neck pain, migraines, as well as muscle and facial pain.
Much about the smile is determined by our DNA, including the lengths of muscles and ligaments that span the jaw, face, head, and neck. Muscle length itself may not be changeable, but it can be adapted through strengthening and other factors. As we consistently use our mouth, changes may occur to teeth and to the bone structure in the jaw. The changes that occur with time disrupt the harmonious structure we were intended to have. The result, in many cases, is chronic pain.
TMJ disorder is the result of dysfunction in the joints that facilitate jaw movement. Due to the location of dysfunction, you may think pain or other symptoms would be localized.
Symptoms of TMJ, however, may include:
- Chronic facial pain
- Chronic head and neck pain, including migraines
- Ringing in the ears
- Popping or clicking in the jaw
- Limited mobility in the jaw
- Stiffness in the jaw and neck
- Difficulty chewing
- Excessive wear to teeth
